About McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne is one of Calgary’s most distinctive communities — a master-planned neighbourhood begun in 1995 by Carma (now Brookfield Residential) and designed on New Urbanism principles, with early concept work by architect Andrés Duany. The idea was simple and, at the time, radical: build a new suburb that works like a traditional small town. The result is tree-lined streets with front porches, garages tucked into back lanes, a genuine main street, and a central clock tower — a design that earned it recognition from the Urban Land Institute as one of the world’s top master-planned communities. It sits in Ward 12, framed by Deerfoot Trail to the west, Stoney Trail to the south, 52nd Street SE to the east, and 130th Avenue SE to the north.

The community is organized into four districts — Inverness, Elgin, Prestwick, and High Street — each with its own architectural character, from English cottage to Craftsman. What that means for buyers is unusual variety in one postal area: starter townhomes, family two-storeys, condos over shops, and bungalows, all within walking distance of coffee, groceries, and the pond. People who love McKenzie Towne tend to love it fiercely — it’s the closest thing Calgary’s suburbs have to a small town with its own identity.

Housing in McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne offers one of the widest housing ranges in the southeast, which is exactly what its planners intended:

  • Character family homes — two-storeys with front porches and rear-lane garages across Inverness, Elgin, and Prestwick, in cottage and Craftsman styles.
  • Townhomes & row houses — plentiful and well-priced, a favourite entry point for first-time buyers.
  • Condos & apartments — including homes above the High Street shops and buildings near the amenities.
  • Bungalows & adult living — select single-level options plus The Aviemore, a well-known 55+ building right in the community.

Shopping & everyday amenities

This is McKenzie Towne’s superpower. High Street is a genuine, walkable main street — grocery store, cafes, restaurants, pubs, services, and seasonal events, all anchored by the community’s clock tower. Most Calgary suburbs drive to a power centre; McKenzie Towne strolls to the shops. When you do need the big-box run, the 130th Avenue SE corridor and South Trail Crossing sit directly on the community’s north edge, and Deerfoot and Stoney Trail make the rest of the city, the airport, and the mountains straightforward. South Health Campus hospital is minutes away in neighbouring Seton.

Parks, playgrounds & gathering places

The community was designed around gathering: central greens in each district, the Inverness pond and fountain, kilometres of connected pathways, plentiful playgrounds, a splash park, an outdoor hockey rink, and a skate park. McKenzie Towne Hall, run by the community’s own council, hosts programs and events year-round — one of the reasons the neighbourhood keeps its small-town feel. Residents pay an annual community fee that maintains the enhanced parks, entry features, and Towne Hall programming (worth budgeting for; I’ll confirm the current amount when we talk specifics).

Schools

McKenzie Towne is served by schools within and around the community across both boards. Options serving the area include:

  • McKenzie Towne School — public elementary, in the community.
  • New Brighton School — public elementary in neighbouring New Brighton, serving parts of the area.
  • St. Albert the Great School — Catholic (K–9), serving McKenzie Towne and area.
  • Nearby middle & high schools — designated schools in the surrounding southeast, reached by bus or a short drive.

🎓 Buying for the schools? Catchments and designated schools change, and they’re set by address — not just community. Tell me the school that matters to you and I’ll confirm exactly which homes fall inside its boundary before you fall for one.
